Soundspace

A visual identity designed to bring clarity to youth music events while maintaining energy and character.

Concept

Soundspace is a youth music initiative run in Whitehorse, supporting emerging musicians through events, workshops, and live performance opportunities. It provides a platform for young people to develop their skills and connect with a broader creative community.

I was consulted on a potential rebrand of the program, then known as “FreeZA Flying Pigs,” which lacked clarity and cohesion across its visual identity. Communication varied across posters, social media, and event materials, making it difficult for audiences to quickly understand key information or recognise the program as a unified offering.

The project focused on developing a clearer, more cohesive visual identity that could better connect with a 15–21 audience while remaining accessible across a range of formats.

Design system

The design system draws from the visual language of 70s music advertising, using bold typography and high contrast to establish a strong and recognisable presence.

A restrained monochrome base provides consistency, while a single accent colour introduces variation and helps establish hierarchy. This allows key information such as dates, locations, and event details to stand out clearly across different formats.

Typography plays a central role, creating impact while remaining readable. Layouts are structured to support quick scanning, particularly in posters and social media where information needs to be understood at a glance.

Interaction

The project approaches inclusion through clarity and accessibility. In fast-paced environments like events and social media, the ability to quickly understand information is essential.

Clear hierarchy, strong contrast, and structured layouts reduce visual noise and support readability, making the content easier to engage with for a wider audience. This is particularly important in youth-focused spaces, where communication needs to be immediate and intuitive.

Outcome

The final outcome is a flexible visual system that supports both digital and physical applications. It provides Soundspace with a clear and cohesive identity, improving communication while maintaining a strong sense of energy and character.
